Denver Broncos restructure Jaylen Waddle’s contract, free up $7.9M ...Middle East

Sport by : (Mile High Sports) -

The Denver Broncos restructured Jaylen Waddle’s contract on Tuesday morning per multiple sources.

That gives the Broncos more money to continue to play with in this continuing free agency period if they so choose to.

Will the Broncos go out and sign a tight end, running back, or defensive lineman?

Denver Broncos restructure Jaylen Waddle’s contract

After pulling off the blockbuster trade for Waddle, the Broncos restructured his contract this morning.

Denver acquired the start receiver for a first and third-round pick as well as an exchange of fourth-rounders. It was undoubtedly the Broncos biggest move of the season.

Now, they freed up another $7.9M in salary cap. Waddle is set to make a mere $1.215M as a base salary with $17M coming as bonus money. That means his cap hit for 2026 is only $4.9M and it leaves the Broncos $19.168M of cap space left. Keep in mind that Denver needs to spend $7.6M on draft picks in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Waddle’s contract details from Over the Cap:

Year – Base Salary – Bonus – Guaranteed Salary – Cap Number

2026   $1.215M  $3.083M    $1.215M          $4.908M 2027   $23.39M  $3.083M    $15.203M        $27.084M 2028   $25.77M  $3.083M    $0                    $30.458M 2029   Void         $3.083M    Void                 $6.166M 2030   Void         $3.083M    Void                 $0

Now, Waddle and Bo Nix together represent less than $10M toward the 2026 salary cap. It’s a masterful gambit by George Paton to be sure.

Will Broncos sign another player with new cap space?

The Broncos now have around $11.6M of salary to spend in order to also sign their draft picks.

Will Denver go out and sign another free agent, or even possibly multiple?

And if they do, what positions are ones of need?

The Broncos could still add skill to their tight end room, as well as depth to the running back room and D-line.

At tight end, veteran David Njoku remains unsigned. The Broncos re-signed their entire room outside of Marcedes Lewis. That included Adam Trautman, Nate Adkins, and Lance Krull. Plus, Evan Engram is still on the roster and will be the focal point at the position.

And while Njoku has faded a bit the last two years, he’s still a valuable pass catching threat, especially in the red zone. He’s caught 4-plus touchdowns in each of the last five straight seasons. And over the course of his career, 25 of his 34 touchdowns have come within the red zone.

A few other names at tight end that are still available include Jonnu Smith, Zach Ertz, and Darren Waller.

What about at running back?

Denver re-signed J.K. Dobbins, but he’s never played an entire season in his career. The Broncos may want to find another veteran running back to fill in just in case Dobbins goes down again.

There are still a handful of solid backup running back options available, too.

Brian Robinson Jr. is one. Miles Sanders is another. Then, there’s Kareem Hunt, Raheem Mostert, and even Najee Harris, although Harris may be too expensive.

At both tight end and running back, the Broncos would need to find relatively cheaper options, especially if they want to sign one of each.

And after losing John Franklin-Myers, Denver could look to sign an interior defensive lineman.

One name that stands out there is Shelby Harris, the former Bronco. He played 48% of the defensive snaps last year for the Browns and had 1 sack, 7 tackles for a loss, and 4 passes defensed at the line.

If Denver doesn’t sign more free agents, they could possibly use the cap space to extend Ja’Quan McMillian or safety Brandon Jones, or even roll the cap over to next year.
