Mayank Yadav comes back to IPL 2026 richer in experience, passed on valuable tips from Shami & Bumrah ...Middle East

It was in 2024, when a searing pacer from Delhi, Mayank Yadav burst on the IPL scene — played 4 matches for LSG, picked up 7 wickets at an economy of only 6.98. In an era of T20 cricket, where scores in excess of 200 are fairly common, Mayank showed great control, bounce — that too at a pace that not many can handle.

Injury-prone Mayank Yadav set for IPL 2026

Yes, his USP being, hitting hitting the bat hard — and that year he reached 157 kmph as well, putting him in sudden spotlight. The talent looked apparent, with of course, a little bit of grooming needed. But as is the case with his kind, back injuries followed, and his 2024 season could not continue any further than that.

But the Indian selectors saw what an average cricket fan did too, and was soon inducted into the Indian team for the Bangladesh T20I series the same year. He was impressive once again, picking up four wickets in three innings, but again a career was shot down with an injury.

Gets tips from Bumrah & Shami

Cut to 2026, he has only manage to add two more matches to his IPL career, none international; and underwent a back surgery, somewhat similar to what Jasprit Bumrah went. IPL 2026 is around the corner now, the bowler is fully fit, and despite not bowling in competitive matches, he might have just gained some valuable experience.

How is that possible, one would ask? The simple answer being, he spent considerable time with Bumrah at the NCA, during his rehab, and now with Shami at LSG. There some valuable tips were passed on by both, like “how to comeback after surgery”, and “things to pay attention to”.

“When I was in rehab at the NCA, Jasprit Bumrah bhaiya was also there. So I have a very good bond with him. He is like a teacher to me. He also had the same surgery, the same scenario. Bumrah bhaiya shared his experience of how to come back after surgery and what things to pay attention to,” Mayank told JioStar.

“He told me how the body will be during recovery, how it will react. Sometimes it will feel good, sometimes not. Whenever we talk on the call or messages, he shares his experience as much as possible.” Not just that, that pretty much shaped how he trained and looked after his fitness, post the surgery.

Time to strive for excellence

As for Shami’s role, in the words of head coach Justin Langer, the latter has taken up the job of mentoring the bowler, quite well. “During the team lunch, Mohammed Shami was speaking and all the boys were hanging on his every word, their eyes never left him. He’s incredibly experienced, a true warrior. We often discuss big brother-little brother or master-apprentice dynamics in coaching, and that’s exactly what we have here.”

But then, as they say, nothing can be a substitute for match practice; it will only be up to Mayank, as to how well he uses these tips by the Indian legends. If only he can bowl at that pace again, pick a few wickets, and win some matches for LSG, he could be on a comeback trail. With a remodeled action, he would have to not only replicate his past show, but maybe have to even better that.
