ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Various movies nominated for an Oscar have ties to Rochester, having been shot on Kodak film. Kodak remains the sole global producer of color motion picture film and makes almost all of its film products in Rochester at the Eastman Business Park.

The company says the film is truly one of a kind, with movies that use it winning awards for best cinematography and motion pictures.

“One Battle After Another” took top honors for best picture. It was shot on 35 millimeter Kodak film. “Sinners,” which took home best cinematography, was shot on 65 millimeter film.

Vanessa Bendetti, the head of motion picture and entertainment for Eastman Kodak Company, says the company is selling more film now than in more than 10 years.

“I think it’s a product of our product, which is the premium gold standard for storytelling but it’s also the discipline and preparedness that drives and the type of filmmakers that are excited to use film,” Bendetti said.

The first commercial transparent roll film, which was perfected by George Eastman and his research chemist, was put on the market in 1889. That’s according to the History of Film page on Kodak’s website. From there began what we know as Kodak.

Bendetti says Kodak maintains inventory but adjusts production for larger Hollywood projects, and it’s shipped from its global headquarters in Rochester.

“For example, like ‘Sinners,’ that’s going to shoot a ton of 65 millimeters; we’re working really closely with them to figure out which stocks they’re going to need. And then we make all of that in Rochester,” Bendetti said. “If somebody is shooting film today in motion picture format in color, it is Kodak,” she said. Bendetti said Kodak continues to grow in both film and the entertainment industry.

Kodak says its film is used by directors who exclusively shoot on film and those who have made the transition from digital.
