Mrs. Peggy Porter Torrence of South Carthage passed peacefully from this earthly life to eternity at 4:29 p.m. Saturday afternoon March 21, 2026 with her loving daughter who had been patiently serving as Mrs. Torrence’s caregiver, at her bedside.
Mrs. Torrence’s pastor, Bro. Ron Ralph, will officiate at the 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon March 24th funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Torrence Family plot in the Garden of Gethsemane at the Smith County Memorial Gardens.
She was born Peggy O’Neal Porter in Hartsville on July 6, 1935 and was one of two daughters of the late Casper Lee Porter who died November 17, 1988 at 75 and Minnie Cowan Porter who died May 22, 1988 at the age of 84.
Two daughters preceded Peggy in death, Connie O’Neal Torrence Ross who died November 14, 2021 at the age of 65 and Cynthia Ann Torrence who died as an infant in 1959.
Sam Bob Sr. and Mrs. Peggy also suffered the loss of their son-in-law, Greg Kemple, who departed this life two years and one day before Mrs. Peggy, on March 20, 2024 at the age of 77.
Her only sibling, Margaret Lee “Maggie” Waller Beadle preceded her in death on November 10, 2009 at the age of 85.
Mrs. Torence was a member of the 1953 graduating class of Smith County High School and where she was a member of the Future Homemakers of America all four years, served as Parliamentarian, and published the F.H.A. newsletter her junior year. She was also a Football Queen attendant, was secretary-treasurer of her junior class and was a member of the junior play cast. Her senior year she also was on the library staff, Science Club and paper staff.
At the home of her parents on August 10, 1955, she was united in marriage to Carthage native, Sammy Bob Torrence Sr.
For many years she served as a substitute teacher in any school that had a teacher shortage that day. Her students loving referred to her as “Miss T”. She retired from that position at the end of the school year in May of 1998, the date coinciding with her husband’s retirement from the Upper Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation.
Mrs. Torrence was a Charter Member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church in the Tanglewood Community beginning in 1991.
Surviving in addition to her husband Sam Bob Sr. of just over seventy years is their daughter, Renee Torrence Kemple of South Carthage; son, Bob Torrence Jr. of Buffalo Valley; three grandchildren, Bo Torrence and wife Sarah of the Chestnut Mound Community and their children, Jaxson and Maddie, Alyssa Torrence Waggoner and husband Hayden of the Tanglewood Community and their children, Everly and Maddox, and the third grandchild Faith Torrence.
The Torrence family has requested memorials be made to the Cornerstone Baptist Church Building Fund.
