For the Colorado Rockies, the 2026 season is set to be a fascinating one filled with experimentation and hope for the future.
A lot was made during the offseason about the people wearing suits up in the front office. Lots of new names. Lots of new faces. Down on the field, it’s more of a mix. We begin with righty-reliver Jimmy Herget.
What is the most important part of your game day prep?
Jimmy Herget: I would say making sure that I have a good meal, let’s say pregame, just making sure that I’m not hungry at all when I go out there.
DC: Is it the same thing every time when you mix it up?
JH: I like pasta. I think that’s probably the best. Any type of like chicken alfredo or chicken pesto or something like that is good for me.
What is your ideal road trip off day?
(It sounds like hitting the golf course?)
JH: Yeah, for sure. I I think it’s I love taking my clubs on the road. Just, you know, there’s a lot of places I’ll never be able to play again. So I think it’s really cool to kind of spread out and, and, and play different spots.
DC: Is there any spot that stands out in your mind as a favorite or one you really love?
JH: Specific cities? Not really. I mean, like Pebble Beach is my favorite one ever.
DC: Well, yeah, that does make sense.
What is your favorite play that you’ve ever made?
JH: I’d say last year there was a kind of a swinging bunt the ball was spinning like really, really hard. We were in Cleveland. I go to grab the ball but before I grabbed it, I realized how hard it was spinning and that if I touched it, there’s a chance that it would spin right out of my glove. So, I just like smacked it to first.
We got the out and stuff. So, it was like one of those (weird) plays that I was like, I don’t know what to do here, so I’m just going to smack it.

DC: Instantaneous decision and it worked. So that’s awesome.
What is your favorite play that you’ve ever seen? (You have to have been in the park)
JH: Anthony Rendon hit a left-handed homer. Blow out game, the same game that Reid Detmers there is no hitter.
DC: Wait, what?
JH: Yeah. You’ve never seen this?
DC: No, I don’t know this… Anthony Rendon?
JH: So, we were up like 12-1 (it was 10-0 but who’s counting?) and Detmers was throwing a no hitter at the time and Rendon got up there. The game was obviously in hand, so he decided to hit lefty. And he hit a homer lefty.
DC: I don’t know how I missed that. (Note: This happened in the final month of my wife’s pregnancy which is probably why I missed it.)
JH: Yeah. Look it up. He hit against Brett Phillips.
DC: That’s amazing.
JH: Yeah absolutely one of the craziest things that I’ve ever seen.

Do you have a favorite baseball quote? (Could be from a movie or a teammate or a coach)
JH: Not exactly. I don’t I I would say like the best quote I’ve ever gotten in general would be from my dad. “Just be yourself.” That’s kind of it.
DC: That’s a good one though for a pitcher like you, who I’m sure there have been coaches over the years who have been like, hey let’s try to change or fix this guy. “Be yourself” is a pretty awesome guiding principle when you’re the only one who throws the way you do.
JH: Exactly right.
