Bama Dining will reopen Burke Dining Hall in the Burke Residence Hall on Monday at 4 p.m.
The dining hall will replace the retail dining location Mary B’s. Burke Dining Hall originally closed in 2020, leaving the southern half of the University’s campus without a residential dining venue.
Officially announced in a March 13 Instagram post by Bama Dining, Burke Dining Hall will feature five “stations” with distinct menus: the Grill, the Mac Lab, Crimson Crust, the Comfort Kitchen and FreshUp Salad Bar. Mobile ordering via the BamaDining app will be available for the Grill, the Mac Lab, Crimson Crust and the dedicated allergy aware menu. Bama Dining also announced the grand opening event for the dining hall on Instagram, featuring a DJ, giveaways and more.
While Bama Dining didn’t share details about the refreshed menus, its Mobile Order app lists pizza, mac and cheese, burgers, quesadillas and grilled chicken tenders among the foods on offer at the Grill, the Mac Lab and Crimson Crust. Orders from the Grill station include a rotating “Side of the Day,” featuring a roster of battered onion rings, sweet potato fries, french fries and tater tots. The Salad Bar and Comfort Kitchen, which share names with offerings at Mary B’s, don’t feature a menu on the app.
The app also lists an “allergy aware” station, much like those available in Lakeside Dining and Fresh Foods. The menu on offer includes turkey burgers, grilled chicken breast, chicken tenders, cauliflower crust pizza, baked sweet potato and salad.
Todd Scott, director of operations for Bama Dining, said that the revived version of Burke Dining Hall would adopt a “create-your-own, made-to-order dining experience,” and that the new experience will be interactive, letting students select from a variety of ingredients and flavors at the stations rather than picking up pre-plated portions.
“This approach allows for greater flexibility, personalization, and accommodation of different tastes and dietary preferences,” Scott said.
Scott also said that the existing location received a refresh to accommodate the revamped dining hall, updating the layout and equipment to the needs of the new concept.
“While the transformation timeline is short, much of the work has been carefully planned and phased to minimize disruption and allow us to reopen quickly for students returning from break,” he said.
McKenna Poisson, a freshman majoring in chemistry, said she was excited for the change after getting sick of the limited options at Mary B’s. Because she lives across the street in Parham Hall, she said that convenient options for on-campus food halls were slim. “I feel like it’s unfair for us in Parham and Tutwiler that, if you want to go to a dining hall, it’s at least a 15 minute walk,” she said. “It doesn’t feel worth it.”
Poisson said she was enthusiastic about the new, customizable options and the increased selection at Burke Dining Hall, although she hoped more vegetarian and lighter meal options would be available.
“I don’t always want a burger or pizza and other more filling options,” she said. Scott said that student feedback will be welcomed as the revamped establishment opened its doors and students experienced the new dining concept. “We’re excited to welcome students back and reintroduce the space,” he said.
