Alabama’s Fay records program’s ninth no-hitter in win over Florida ...Middle East

News by : (The Crimson White) -

Former walk-on right-hander Tyler Fay etched his name into the Crimson Tide history books Friday night, tossing the ninth no-hitter in program history.

The feat was the first complete-game, nine-inning no-hitter by an Alabama starting pitcher since 1942, accomplished in a 6–0 win over No. 18-ranked Florida.

From the very first inning, Fay looked untouchable. He opened the night with a 1-2-3 frame on just 11 pitches and never let up, attacking the zone with precision and confidence. His fastball command set the tone early, consistently painting corners and getting ahead in counts.

“That was probably the best my fastball command has ever been,” Fay said. “Just kind of up and down, in and out.”

Fay’s velocity backed it up; he touched 97 mph multiple times early and sat around 94 to 95 through the first six innings, pairing it with a sharp cutter, an unhittable slider and a changeup that kept Gators hitters off-balance all night.

“The cutter was really good to a couple of those lefties stuffing it in on the hands and slider changeup, everything was just in the zone and had a good feel for it,” Fay said. “But I really think just hitting the corners and dotting up low in the zone with the fastball was really the biggest thing for me getting ahead in counts and just kind of stealing pitches that way.”

Fay cruised through the middle innings, retiring hitter after hitter and piling up strikeouts. It wasn’t until midway through the game that the magnitude of the moment began to sink in.

“It was probably the fourth or fifth inning that I realized I hadn’t given up a hit,” Fay said. “I just kept going back out and kept getting ahead and getting quick outs, that’s about it.”

Even as his pitch count climbed into uncharted territory, eventually reaching a career-high 132 pitches, Fay never lost command. He finished the night with a career-high 13 strikeouts and just two walks, overpowering the Gators from start to finish.

By the eighth inning, he had already set a career high in pitches, which was previously 95. Still, there was no thought of Fay being yanked from the game by his coaches.

“Actually, no, I was expecting to, but I think it was after the seventh and eighth inning, I looked over at him when he walked by, and he didn’t say, you’re done,” Fay said when he was asked if he had to fight head coach Rob Vaughn to keep him in. “He just looked at me, I was like, ‘Keep me in.’”

Then came the ninth. Fay struck out the first batter to set a new career high. Another strikeout followed, leaving him one out away. All that stood in his way was Brendan Lawson, who has been one of the best hitters in the nation this year with a 1.599 OPS. With the crowd on its feet, Fay delivered again, forcing Lawson to fly out to left fielder Justin Osterhouse, securing the final out, and completing the no-hitter.

As the final out was recorded, Fay was mobbed by teammates, an image he says will stick with him long after his playing days are over.

“Just how happy all the boys were for me,” Fay said. “Every single guy came up and gave me a huge hug. And you can just tell how much everyone cares about each other here.

For Vaughn, the performance was the culmination of years of development and a shift in Fay’s mindset.

“He’s a guy that came here as a walk-on just trying to get better,” Vaughn said. “But the biggest difference now is he expects success. That’s something that started in the fall. He’s worked for that.”

Fay’s journey made the moment even more meaningful. Growing up, Florida was his dream school; now, he made history against them.

“If you would have told 13-year-old me that I did this, I would not believe you at all,” Fay said. “I used to watch these guys on TV. Doing this tonight is pretty cool.”

For Vaughn, nights like Fay’s are why players choose to return for another year instead of rushing to the pros, chasing moments that will outlast anything the game can offer beyond college.

“You come back for nights like this,” Vaughn said. “These are the memories that make college baseball special.”
