Newcastle 1-2 Sunderland Stats: Brobbey’s Last-Minute Winner Secures Memorable Derby Comeback ...Middle East

Brian Brobbey’s last-minute goal secured a sensational comeback victory for Sunderland against Newcastle in Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park.

Brian Brobbey secured a memorable comeback win for Sunderland at Newcastle United in the Premier League, scoring a 90th-minute winner in a 2-1 victory at St James’s Park.

There were just 15 seconds left of the 90 minutes when the ball found its way to the feet of Brobbey a couple of yards out from goal. His first attempt was saved, but his second sent the away end into delirium, securing Sunderland the Tyne-Wear derby double in 2025-26.

After Anthony Gordon‘s first-half strike had given Newcastle fans hope of a first league win over Sunderland since 2010, goals from Chemsdine Talbi and Brobbey turned the game on its head in a sensational second-half comeback.

Those goals meant that Sunderland increased their unbeaten run against rivals Newcastle in league competition to 11 games – the best-ever run seen in this fixture by either side.

Gordon had scored in both of his previous two Newcastle appearances in the Premier League, against Manchester United and Chelsea respectively, and he made it three in a row with the opening goal in this Tyne-Wear derby.

After a quick goal kick from Melker Ellborg to Luke O’Nien, the Englishman played a horrendous pass to the feet of Nick Woltemade just outside the area. Woltemade fed Gordon, and the Magpies’ forward made no mistake, giving Newcastle the lead on 10 minutes.

That strike meant that since the start of 2026, Chelsea’s João Pedro (11) is the only Premier League player with more goals scored across all competitions than Gordon (10).

Eddie Howe’s side dominated the majority of the first half, with Sunderland struggling to contend with Newcastle’s pace in transition. They nearly added a second just minutes before the half-time break, but Sven Botman’s header from a brilliant Lewis Hall cross cannoned off the post.

Sunderland came into this derby having scored just eight away goals in the Premier League all season – only Wolves (seven) have fewer. They needed to find one to get back into this game, and 12 minutes into the second half Talbi managed to score it.

A wicked corner was palmed away from goal by Aaron Ramsdale, but only as far as Trai Hume, whose shot was going off target before being chested towards goal by Habib Diarra, who was denied but only to see the ball fall to Talbi who swept the ball into the back of the net from close range.

Talbi (20 years, 317 days) became the youngest player to score for Sunderland against Newcastle in the Premier League, and youngest to score in this fixture in the top-flight since Newcastle’s Charles N’Zogbia in April 2006 (19y 324d).

Newcastle thought they’d regained the lead with 15 minutes remaining, when Malick Thiaw headed in from a corner, but it was disallowed following Jacob Murphy’s infringement on Sunderland goalkeeper Ellborg.

In the end, it was left to Brobbey to secure three points for the away side. After great work from Enzo Le Fée, the Dutch striker saw his first attempt sensationally saved by Ramsdale, but made no mistake from the rebound to net his sixth Premier League goal of the campaign.

His goal was just the second 90th-minute winner scored in a Premier League match between Sunderland and Newcastle, after December 2014 (a 1-0 win for Sunderland on that occasion, scored by Adam Johnson).

It meant that only Aston Villa have won as many points from losing positions than Sunderland (19) in the Premier League this season, while Newcastle have lost the most from winning positions (22).

It was very much a game of two halves, with Newcastle dominating for large spells of the first half, but Sunderland coming out from the half-time break and putting constant pressure on the home side in the second period, and in the end, arguably deserving all three points.

Eddie Howe is the first ever Newcastle manager to lose both of his first two league games against Sunderland. Meanwhile, Régis Le Bris is now just the second Sunderland manager to win both of his first two league Tyne-Wear derbies in charge, after Gus Poyet in 2013-14.

Following this result, Newcastle have been leapfrogged by Sunderland in the Premier League table, with a place in European competition next season under serious threat.
