Spring break travel complicated by TSA shortages, rising fuel prices ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

For the Martorano family, a spring break trip is a major undertaking, and the responsibility dad.

“We got here earlier than we ever would have on a normal basis because you don’t know what the lines will be like. It looks ok, but you never know,” Christopher Marorano said as he checked in the family’s bags at O’Hare International Airport.

Spring Break travelers across the country could encounter troubles as the season begins.

Transportation Security Administration workers are calling out after weeks of not being paid because of the partial government shutdown. In addition, the war in Iran is driving up both the cost of gasoline and jet fuel.

“Its been a real mess,” said Clint Henderson of The Points Guy travel website. “We have already seen a big spike in ticket prices.“

If the price surge continues, he said, it’s possible demand for travel could slow down, but for right now that demand is strong.

According to the AAA, roughly one in three Americans are planning some kind of spring break travel this year.

For many,  that will mean getting to destinations by car, fighting the traffic and soaring gasoline prices.

AAA The Auto Club Group spokesperson Molly Hart said that is forcing people to make changes.

“Those who planned to go five hours away might go three hours away because of the price of gas right now,” she said.

Hart advises people to book their trips through a travel agent who can find the best deals. She said to look for bundles that include a hotel, flight and rental car, explaining costs are cheaper when combined.

Henderson said The Points Guy website is encouraging its users to book as much travel now as they can afford. That includes summer and holiday travel.

“With the skyrocketing price of jet fuel, we are just not sure how high ticket prices are going to go,” he said.

Most airlines, according to Henderson, have polices that allow for travel credits if the price of a ticket goes down between the time you purchase it and the time you use it. It is up to the purchaser to keep track and request the credit. That might not be the case in basic economy, and may vary depending on airline.

Travel professionals are also telling users to check out airport websites to see how long delays might be. Because of the shut down, the TSA is no longer maintaining its website or updating its app.
