Some important spring safety tips to keep in mind ...Middle East

News by : (TribToday) -

It’s finally starting to look like spring. The birds are chirping and the weather is warming up.

After being cooped up indoors all winter, many of us are ready to get outside and enjoy some fresh air.

While natural sunlight and outdoor activity are great for our skin, health and mood, it’s still important to take precautions to stay safe.

As you venture outside, keep in mind that winter months can cause shifts in your yard. Watch for new divots, rocks or stones that may have moved as the ground thawed.

Be mindful of cracks in sidewalks or potholes in the road that could cause you to stumble.

A good rule of thumb is to keep an eye on the six feet of ground in front of you so you can avoid potential hazards.

Slippery surfaces can also still be a concern. Even though winter is ending, rain can make decks and stone pathways slick.

Leaves also can create a serious slipping hazard. Keeping your yard clear of debris can help reduce the risk of a fall.

If the warmer weather inspires you to take walks around your neighborhood or community, try to plan ahead. Wear sunscreen, preferably SPF 30 or higher.

When possible, choose areas with sidewalks or walking paths so you don’t have to spend long periods on the road.

Let someone know when you are going for a walk and the route you plan to take.

Wearing bright or reflective clothing can help drivers see you more easily.

Bring your cellphone in case of an emergency, stay hydrated and wear sturdy, supportive shoes rather than footwear like flip-flops that could cause discomfort or increase the risk of falling.

If you plan to work in the yard or garden, make sure you do so safely. Consider using a bench or raised garden beds to make it easier to get up and down from the ground.

Avoid lifting objects that are too heavy or require two people to move.

Keep hoses and tools stored safely when not in use.

Watch for holes created by burrowing animals, and wear gloves, hats and other protective gear to prevent scratches or injuries.

Most importantly, take breaks when needed and avoid overexerting yourself.

If you’re looking for a class that offers helpful tips or simply gets you out of the house, consider some of the programs we have coming up.

A Matter of Balance class begins March 24 at 1:30 p.m. at the Girard MultiGenerational Center. To register, call 330-545-6596.

Another Matter of Balance class will start March 30 at 10:30 a.m. at Boardman Park. Call 330-726-8105 to register. A Health Coaches for Hypertension class will begin April 1 at 12:30 p.m. at the East Library, and Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance starts April 20 at 9 a.m.

Many of these tips are things we already know, but sometimes we just need a reminder. For example, I know I should wear sunscreen when I go outside, but sometimes I think, “This will only take a minute.”

Before I know it, I get distracted with another task, then another, and suddenly two hours have passed and I’m sunburned and dehydrated. So please learn from my mistakes and take your safety seriously. We all want to enjoy the warmer weather — let’s make sure we do it safely.
