The Phoenix Suns were in position to pick up one of their most impressive wins of the season before things unraveled late in their 101-100 loss to the San Antonio Spurs.
Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox made a driving layup with 26 seconds remaining to bring the game within one point.
After Suns rookie Rasheer Fleming missed two free throws, the Spurs had the ball back, still down just one, with 10 seconds remaining.
That’s when Victor Wembanyama showed why he’s an MVP candidate and has the Spurs as the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference.
The 7-foot-4 star took the inbound pass, guarded by Ryan Dunn, took a few dribbles to his right and nailed a pull-up jumper, fading away from the basket that left 1.1 seconds remaining.

The Suns inbounded to Devin Booker, who tossed up a prayer that didn’t go in.
Phoenix started fast, grabbing an early lead and rode that to halftime, up 59-52. The Suns withstood different Spurs runs throughout the second half and had the lead late in the fourth quarter, as they’ve done so lately, but couldn’t finish.
Wembanyama finished with 34 points, 12 rebounds, three steals, one block and one assist. Fox added 23 points, seven rebounds, three assists and one steal.
After less than five points in three of the Suns’ last four games and a combined 19 points over the four-game stretch (7-of-30 shooting), Collin Gillespie led Phoenix in scoring with 24 points on an efficient 7 for 13 from the field. He added four assists, two rebounds and two steals.
The Suns turned the Spurs over 14 times and had nine steals compared to San Antonio’s six steals and 11 turnovers forced.
