UChicago’s Cooper Costello broke his own Division III NCAA record on Thursday night, winning the 100 fly in a 45.85. That broke his own previous record of a 45.97 that he swam to win the Division III title a year ago.

Costello was out slower on the first 50 but had a strong 50 on the back half to get under his previous record. He still remains as the only sub-46 second swimmer in the men’s 100 fly. No one else in the field came home under 25-seconds tonight, showing just how strong Costello’s back half was.

UChicago has now won the men’s 100 fly three years in a row. Costello has won the last two years while Jesse Ssengonzi won back in 2024. Ssengonzi also won back in 2022, marking four out of the last five years that UChicago has won. The team had never won the 100 fly prior to Ssengonzi’s win in 2022.
