ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Catholic Diocese of Rochester will install Most Reverend John Bonnici as the next bishop of the Rochester area on Thursday.
The installation ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. during a mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral on Flower City Park. Due to limited seating, the mass is by ticket only, but you can livestream it.

Pope Leo XIV appointed Bonnici, originally from New York City, after he accepted the resignation of Bishop Salvatore Matano. Diocese rules say that bishops must submit their retirement or resignation papers to the pope once they turn 75. Matano is 79 and has led the diocese since 2024.
Bonnici will be the 10th bishop of Rochester’s diocese. In a news conference after he was appointed, he promised to “listen, learn, and love” in his new role. He also expressed interest in trying a local favorite, the garbage plate.
