ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Lollypop Farm says its humane investigators seized four dogs and recovered one dead dog at a home on Third Street Wednesday.
Lollypop Farm says at around 2 p.m. Wednesday, humane investigators were dispatched to the home following a request from Rochester Police, who were there investigating a criminal trespass complaint.
Police say they saw an animal in distress and contacted Lollypop Farm. Humane investigators contacted the person living there to get permission to go inside the home.
According to investigators, four dogs were roaming around freely in the home, and a fifth dog was found with injuries that resulted in his death.
The four dogs seized were brought to Lollypop Farm to be evaluated by a veterinarian. Investigators say a necropsy of the dead dog will be done to determine the cause of death.
Lollypop Farm says earlier this winter, humane investigators had responded to similar complaints of neglect at the same home. Lollypop says due to New York State animal welfare laws and the condition of the animals at the time, no dogs were seized during that earlier visit.
According to Lollypop, humane investigators continued to do routine in-person follow-ups and stayed in contact with the person living there.
In February, animal rights advocates gathered outside Rochester City Hall to protest what they see as a lack of action from local law enforcement in handling animal abuse cases.
The protest followed a landlord’s video on Facebook of dogs being kept in poor conditions at the home on Third Street.

Lollypop Farm says it “takes all reports of animal cruelty seriously and remains dedicated to protecting animals throughout the region.”
People are asked to report suspected cases of animal cruelty or neglect by calling the Humane Law Enforcement line at (585) 223-6500.
