The Bears Are Signing Yet Another Free Agent Defensive Tackle ...Middle East

When it comes to the Chicago Bears’ defensive line, it looks like General Manager Ryan Poles is taking a “the more, the merrier” type of approach.

The Tribune’s Brad Biggs reports (via Twitter/X) the Bears are signing defensive tackle James Lynch. A fourth-round pick (130th overall) by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2020 NFL Draft, Lynch has played 71 games (only four starts) in his pro career.

After missing the 2023 season because of an ACL injury suffered during a training camp practice that summer, Lynch spent the last two seasons with the Tennessee Titans. Lynch hasn’t missed a game in the two years since returning from injury. In those 34 games, the Baylor University product collected 1.5 sacks, 45 total tackles (20 solo), 3 tackles-for-loss, and five quarterback hits while playing on just 579 total snaps.

Who is James Lynch? And why did the Bears sign him?

Signing James Lynch isn’t a blockbuster move. However, it gets the wheels turning in my head when thinking about the state of Chicago’s defensive line. Once the deal becomes officially official, James will join Neville Gallimore and Kentavius Street as the third free-agent defensive tackle signing this offseason. Understandably, one of the front office’s offseason missions was to add depth to the interior defensive line. To that end, the Bears are doing a bang-up job.

The powers that be at Halas Hall clearly did not love the depth at that particular position group and decided to attack the problem with a volume approach. And I see nothing wrong with that. NFL trench wars are a battle of attrition. So it makes sense to bring in waves of players who could be helpful pieces of the puzzle. But it still feels like something is missing. Unfortunately, I do not know too many obvious answers to questions regarding the top of the depth chart.

I think that Gervon Dexter Sr. and Grady Jarrett can be solid rotational players who can eat up space, occasionally get to the quarterback, and provide a positive impact when defending against the run. But after watching the performance of both players last season, I do not feel comfortable relying on them to have major bounce-back years. Do I think it can happen? Sure. But expecting it to happen would be a mistake. And while adding depth pieces like Neville Gallimore, Kentavius Street, and James Lynch is a heady thing, bringing in an impact player is necessary.

Unless something unexpected happens, that impact interior defensive lineman will likely come in the 2026 NFL Draft. A recent mock draft from ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. had the Bears targeting Ohio State defensive tackle Kayden McDonald. BN’s latest mock from Matt Rooney sends Clemson defensive tackle Peter Woods to Chicago. I’m sure other players could make sense for the Bears. But as this offseason trudges along, it is becoming more clear with each passing day that the team’s biggest defensive line needs are more likely to be found on NFL Draft weekend than they are to be discovered via free agency or trade.
