Point Loma softball has talent to win another CIF championship ...Middle East

POINT LOMA – Many high school coaches dread the loss of their top senior players to graduation, wondering how they’re going to replace the leadership and skills those veteran athletes delivered.

Pointers softball head coach Billy Hunyady is not one of them.

In fact, Hunyady is thrilled with three young new additions to his team, a team that won the school’s first CIF softball title and Southern California crown a year ago. That was in Div. II, and this year the Pointers have been bumped up to Div. I.

“We lost three senior starters at catcher, right field, and shortstop,” Hunyady said as his players hustled through a spirited workout last week. “But we picked up two top-line freshman travel ball girls who play right field (Kendall Vickers) and shortstop (Madison Dudley).

“We added another freshman left-hand pitcher, (Remington Spangler), who stands 5 feet 10 inches tall and might throw the ball the hardest on the team. She gives us three pitchers (with Ella Poulin and Ryoko Schroth) who are as good as anyone in the county.”

To start the season, the Pointers were ranked No. 2 in the CIF San Diego Section, which includes San Diego and Imperial counties.

Overall, Hunyady’s early results include a 4-2 record, outscoring their opponents 25-5. The team’s overall batting average is an eye-popping .353, and of 48 team hits, nine have left the playing field as home runs. Hunyady is proud of his power hitters, noting last year’s team hit 34 out of the park and this year’s team has hit nine in six games, led by Poulin and Avery MacPherson (three each.)

“We’ve got speed and power,” Hunyady said.

Top hitters to date include Vickers (.538 batting average), Leyton MacPherson (.529), and sister Avery MacPherson (.500).

Defensively, Hunyady also feels his Pointers have an edge.

“We have a very deep bench, and I feel comfortable putting anyone in without feeling we’re taking a step back,” he said.

The Pointers will face Christian, Patrick Henry, Cathedral Catholic, and Scripps Ranch in Western League games that begin April 15 after a series of tournament games currently underway.

A new set of game uniform tops read “The Point” across the front, which was approved by the CIF office.

Home games for the softball team are played at the Correia Sports Complex located at 2346 Famosa Blvd.
