PHOENIX — Phoenix Suns forward Dillon Brooks was cited and released for reckless driving and exceeding the speed limit in January, weeks before his marijuana DUI arrest, according to Scottsdale police.

Brooks was pulled over for driving 85 mph in a 45-mph zone in a 2019 Rolls-Royce Wraith just after midnight on Jan. 12. He scored 16 points in 24 minutes in the Suns’ home victory over the Wizards just hours earlier.

Anything 35 mph or more over the posted speed limit is defined as “reckless,” and anything 21 mph or more over the posted speed limit is defined as “excessive,” according to police.

In body-camera footage, an officer walks up to Brooks’ car after pulling him over. Brooks asks if he was pulled over for speeding, and the officer confirms that it was for speeding. Brooks was then unable to provide proof of insurance to the officer.

In the police report, the officer wrote that he was “increasingly concerned about the extreme risk of a catastrophic collision or the vehicle striking a pedestrian.

“Several businesses in the area were open and operating,” the officer continued. “A collision at such speeds could have resulted in multiple fatalities or serious physical injuries.”

Brooks is facing two misdemeanors for reckless driving and exceeding the speed limit by more than 20 mph and is scheduled to appear in court.

If Brooks does not show up to court, there will be a warrant out for his arrest.

The city prosecutor’s office will determine whether Brooks faces criminal charges for the incident in January.

Earlier this month, the Suns forward was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in Scottsdale. Brooks was not charged upon his release and the substance that he was suspected to be under the influence of was not alcohol but marijuana, according to Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro.

Brooks is currently sidelined with a fractured left hand, and the team said on Feb. 24 he would be reevaluated in four to six weeks, a timeframe that could see him return at the earliest during the last week of March, or at the latest during the end of the first week in April.

He is averaging 20.9 points, a career high, along with 3.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists.
