ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Over the past seven days, the Rochester airport has recorded peak wind gusts exceeding 45 miles per hour each day. In fact, both this past Saturday and again on Wednesday, gusts topped 60 miles per hour! Looking at a longer period also provides some insight.
Over the past 30 days, from mid-February into mid-March, the data show a clear shift. Wind speeds remained relatively light through much of February, but that trend changed noticeably as March began. Average wind speeds and peak gusts began increasing just as we turned the calendar page.
It is a familiar pattern for residents of Rochester. As the days grow longer and the sun angle increases, warmer air begins pushing northward. At the same time, winter is slow to retreat, creating an ongoing battle between the lingering cold air to the north and advancing spring warmth to the south.
