Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Butterfly specialist Penny Brereton is headed to Northern Kentucky University in the fall of 2026 to continue her swimming career. Brereton trains with Crystal Lake Co-Op and her club team, Palatine Park District.
“I’m so excited to announce my commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Northern Kentucky University. I want to give a huge thank you to my family, friends, teammates and coaches who have supported me along the way. I would also like to thank Coach Kevin for this amazing opportunity. GO NORSE!! ”
Brereton, who also shows strength in the 200 IM, competed at the IHSA Girls Sectional (SCY) in Barrington in November while representing Crystal Lake Co-Op. She was the runner-up in the 100 fly (58.87) and finished 4th in the 200 IM (2:13.90). Both remain lifetime bests.
At the 2026 Illinois Senior Championships (SCY) in March, Brereton competed for Palatine Park and posted a personal best in the 200 fly, finishing 14th with a time of 2:11.62. She competed in the 50 fly (27.48) and 100 fly (59.46) as well.
Brereton secured a lifetime best in the 200 fly (LCM) at the Illinois Senior Championships over the summer, clocking 2:34.28 in prelims. She went on to place 16th in finals with a time of 2:34.40.

100 Fly – 58.87 200 Fly – 2:11.62 200 IM – 2:13.90The NKU women’s team finished 7th out of seven teams at the 2026 Horizon League Championships. NKU’s swimming program is relatively new, having launched its first season in 2024–2025.
Brereton has the potential to contribute upon arrival, especially in the butterfly events. Her 200 fly time would have been strong enough to qualify for the ‘B’ final at last year’s conference championships. She also would have had the second-fastest times on the team this season in the 100 fly, 200 fly, and 200 IM.
Gabriella Stephens, who will arrive on campus in the fall of 2026 alongside Brereton, will be a strong training partner, owning best times of 57.18 in the 100 fly, 2:08.63 in the 200 fly and 2:06.17 in the 200 IM.
Brereton has a brother, Noah, who is also a collegiate swimmer, currently in his freshman year at McKendree University. He recently earned personal bests in the 500 free (4:32.89), 1000 free (9:20.83), and 400 IM (4:01.12) at the 2026 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships. In the finals session, he placed 11th in the 1000 free, 14th in the 500 free (4:33.88), and 21st in the 400 IM (4:03.36).
