ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Humane Society of Greater Rochester is investigating a potential animal abuse case on the city’s west side after a dog was found dead in a dumpster on Maryland Street.
Calls about the incident came in around 11 a.m. on March 13. Humane Society officers arrived at the scene and found the deceased dog. They also caught another dog running loose nearby. It is unclear if the dogs have the same owner.
Reno DiDominico, vice president of the Humane Society, said they need an official cause of death for the dog before proceeding with the investigation.
“But some people just will dispose of their animals in their backyard. And of course, there are some people who will throw them out in the trash,” said DiDominico. “Do I agree with it? No. But I can’t do anything about it. And if we do find usually what we do here, and we get a lot of these calls, is when we do find animals in the trash, we try to determine cause of that, to make sure that there was no foul play involved.”
The Humane Society recently went to Albany to push for legislative support for animal welfare bills. They hope to change the law from reactionary, which requires something to happen to the animal before involvement, to a more preventative approach.
DiDominico said the bill he hopes to pass has received a lot of support. However, other bills in the Senate take priority.
