ROCHESTER, N.Y. — An alumna of the University of Rochester played a key role in ensuring medical accuracy on HBO’s hit drama “The Pitt.”
Dr. Sylvia Owusu-Ansah graduated from the University of Rochester in 2000, then attended medical school at the University of Chicago. She completed her residency in Washington, D.C., before becoming an attending physician at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Her involvement with “The Pitt” began through connections and the nonprofit Hollywood Health and Society, which links health experts to media productions.
“They had then just been greenlighted to go on to HBO Max, and she said, it’s your lucky day, the writers are in the writer’s room,” Owusu-Ansah said. “So in May of 2024, I proceeded to go with them to the, to John Wells Productions, I walk in the door, and there’s Noah Wyle, he wasn’t on the initial call, so then, then it triggers to me, oh my gosh, what I’m doing is a big deal.”

“Each episode was like, oh my gosh, that was my patient, and they’re using it, and they’re using it well, and they’re telling the real story,” Owusu-Ansah said. “And then now year two is just like, it’s overwhelming, and it’s good to know that the storylines that I told were in line with what people can learn from, people are willing to hear, that people are connecting with, and that the writers and executive producers and directors of ‘The Pitt’ portrayed it in such a way that, you know, defines real humanity, as opposed to drama.”
Owusu-Ansah shared that some of her storylines included topics on sickle cell, healthcare disparities, and the history of Freedom House Ambulance.
