Ann Arbor Pioneer – 283 Northville – 254 Saline – 226 Detroit Catholic Central – 163 Bloomfield Hills – 147′

The 2026 Boys MHSAA Division I Championships took place this weekend at Oakland University in Rochester, MI. At the end of the meet on Saturday, Ann Arbor Pioneer had reclaimed the crown after finishing 2nd to Saline last year. Pioneer had won 4 straight titles prior to their runner-up finish last year, which makes this their 5th title in the past 6 years. Defending champion Saline wound up 3rd this year, while Northville came in 2nd after pushing Pioneer all meet.

Northville jumped out to a phenomenal start, taking the first couple events. The Northville quartet of sophomore Justin Okopny (23.97), senior Ace Spicer (25.71), senior Ben Hu (22.13), and senior Brady Stenson (20.03) combined to win the 200 medley relay in 1:31.84. Other notable times from the medley relay include Andrew Skaggs‘ 24.29 breast split for Zeeland, Edward Zhang‘s 21.61 fly split on the Pioneer relay, Caleb Storey‘s 19.94 free split for Jenison, and Sam Campbell‘s 22.31 back split on the Milford relay.

Facing an incredibly quick turnaround, Northville senior Brady Stenson won the 200 free to become the first individual champion of the meet. Stenson clocked a 1:37.17, successfully defending his title from last year in this event. His performance in finals Saturday came after he clocked a career best and Northville school record of 1:36.79 in prelims. That time also scared the MHSAA DI record of 1:36.67, which has stood since 2010. Stenson’s teammate Justin Okopny also helped Northville jump out to the lead, finishing 6th with a career best 1:39.88.

Pioneer then began to build the momentum which would ultimately lead to their victory. Senior Edward Zhang won the 200 IM in a tight race with Saline junior Issac Adanin. They were nearly tied at the 50, where Zhang split 23.72 to Adanin’s 23.81. Zhang then expanded his lead, clocking a 26.89 on the back leg, compared to Adanin’s 27.61. Adanin, who would go on to win the 100 breast later in the meet, made his biggest move on breaststroke, out-splitting Zhang 30.09 to 30.73. Adanin was quicker on freestyle as well, splitting 25.72 to Zhang’s 25.77, but it wasn’t enough. At the finish, Zhang stopped the clock in 1:47.11, just ahead of Adanin’s 1:47.23. The performances for both boys marked career bests. Adanin was the defending champion in this race, having won in 1:48.23 last year. Also of note, Zhang and Adanin are club teammates at the Ann Arbor-based Club Wolverine.

As mentioned above, Adanin would go on to win the 100 breast. It was yet another tough battle for Adanin, but this time he was the one to get his hands on the wall first. Zeeland junior Andrew Skaggs was out very fast, splitting 25.31 on the opening 50. That left Adanin, who was out in 25.70 in a deficit at the halfway mark. Adanin had the superior back half, however, coming home in 28.80 to Skaggs’ 29.28. Adanin finished in 54.50, just ahead of Skaggs (54.59). Both swims mark career bests for Adanin and Skaggs. The 100 breast was a big event for Saline, as fellow junior Logan Truskowski took 3rd in a career best 55.58.

Jenison senior Caleb Storey was the only swimmer this year to win both of his events. Storey first won the 50 free, swimming a 20.34. That performance marks a new career best for the senior. Then went on to win the 100 free in 44.64, yet another career best. That 100 free final was a tight race, with Aiden Bayle (44.82) and Camren Turowski (44.96) going under 45 seconds as well.

Grandville also grabbed a win on the day, seeing Oliver Ottenwess take the 100 fly in 49.02. Ottenwess’ time is a new career best. He was out extremely fast on Saturday, splitting 22.36 on the opening 50.

Pioneer found their way to the podium once more when junior Charlie Knoepp blasted a 4:24.00 in the 500 free. Knoepp touched as the only swimmer in the field to go under 4:30, making it the most decisive victory of the day. It was a massive personal best for Knoepp, who entered the meet with a top mark of 4:28.21. The 500 was Pioneer’s single biggest event of the meet, as they saw senior Cam Kline take 4th (4:33.22) and freshman Gavin Martens finish 7th (4:46.43). It was a strong showing for Northville as well, with the Stenson-Okopny duo taking 2nd (4:30.45) and 3rd (4:31.48) respectively.

Bloomfield hills won the 200 free relay convincingly, touching 1st by more than a second with a 1:24.66. Seif Elbaradey (21.51), Francis Baker (21.74), Charlie Antone (21.45), and Miles Marx (19.96) teamed up to get the job done. Marx’s split was the fastest in the field Saturday by over half-a-second.

Milford earned a win in the 100 back, where senior Sam Campbell clocked a 47.95. That was a huge swim for Campbell, marking his first time under 48 seconds in the event. He entered the meet with a personal best of 48.60. Campbell managed to post the fastest split in the field on both 50’s of the race, taking it out in 23.00 and coming home in 24.95.

Holland West Ottawa junior Isaac Kamara-Hagemeyer won 1-meter diving with a score of 315.20. He was pushed hard by Novi senior Drew Reed (310.95), Pioneer junior Asher Morgan (309.60), and Saline junior Carter Mitton (305.70).

The meet ended in fitting fashion, with Pioneer on top of the podium. Senior Henry Baumhover (44.82), Knoepp, (45.59), Kline (46.61), and Zhang (44.82) combined to win the 400 free relay in 3:01.84, touching 1st by exactly 2 seconds over runner-up Northville. Notably, Baumhover’s lead-off leg would have tied for 2nd in the individual 100 free, which he didn’t race. Instead, Baumhover swam the 100 fly, where he came in 3rd with a 49.83, and the 50 free, where he finished 3rd with a  20.57.

Other notable splits in the 400 free relay include Stenson, who anchored the Northville relay in 44.15, which was the fastest split in the field Saturday. Camren Turowski anchored the Detroit Catholic Central relay in 44.32, while Miles Marx led the Bloomfield Hills relay off in 45.06.

There were a couple para events on the day as well. East Kentwood junior Gus Perton won the para 50 free and 100 free, clocking times of 38.56 and 1:31.33 respectively.
