Multiple schools and school districts across the Chicago area Monday were closed or delayed as the National Weather Service issued blizzard warnings and winter weather advisories in northern Illinois.
Some of the schools announced their closures Sunday night, before the snow began. Others issued closures as heavy snow fell Monday morning, with the NBC 5 Storm Team warning of “several hours of intense snow” expected.
In McHenry and DeKalb Counties in Illinois, a blizzard warning was in effect through 1 p.m., with between 4-7 inches of snow expected. In most other Chicago area counties, a winter weather advisory was in effect, with between 1-3 inches possible.
Across all of northern Illinois, most roads were ‘covered with snow or ice,” the Illinois Department of Transportation warned.
As of Monday morning, more than a dozen schools and districts in counties to the north and west were closed or delayed, including in Carpentersville, Zion, Grayslake, Wauconda, Cary , Wonder Lake and Woodstock. Schools in Kenosha County were also closed, and multiple private schools across the Chicago suburbs reported closures as well.
