'90s Rock Legend, With 5 No. 1 Hit Songs, Turns 54 ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

Best known for co-writing five No. 1 hit songs, including "All the Small Things" and "What's My Age Again?", Hoppus has remained a central figure in shaping the sound of late-'90s and early-2000s rock.

Born Mark Allan Hoppus in Ridgecrest, California, Hoppus grew up in a military-influenced household where his father designed missiles for the U.S. Department of Defense. Despite his early life challenges, including his parents’ divorce, Hoppus found solace in punk rock and skateboarding culture. Inspired by bands like Bad Religion, NOFX and Social Distortion, he embarked on a musical path that would change the pop-punk landscape forever.

Hoppus’ life, however, has not been without hardship. In 2021, he was diagnosed with stage IV-A diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, an aggressive form of blood cancer. He candidly shared his journey on social media, revealing that he had been undergoing chemotherapy and faced an uncertain future.

After six rounds of chemotherapy, Hoppus was declared cancer-free in September 2021. He has described his life since as “bonus time,” cherishing each day and every relationship more deeply.

Blink-182 Reunite

Tragedy also played a role in reuniting Blink-182’s classic lineup. Tom DeLonge’s call to Hoppus regarding divorce paperwork unexpectedly revealed Hoppus’ cancer diagnosis, leading to daily conversations and the healing of their once-strained friendship. Travis Barker’s own traumatic recovery from a near-fatal plane crash in 2008 further strengthened the bond among the bandmates.

“When all three of us are in the same room, magic happens and it’s awesome,” Hoppus said, emphasizing the enduring brotherhood between him, DeLonge, and Barker.

Hoppus has hinted at new music in 2025, showing that even after decades in the industry and surviving life-threatening illness, his creative spark remains unbroken. Blink-182 may be taking a step back from live shows this year, focusing on writing and personal projects, but the legend of Hoppus and his band endures.
