ROCHESTER, N.Y. – New weather data and computer modeling have shifted the timing of threatening weather for Western New York. A strong cold front is still approaching the area tomorrow, but the speed of the system has slowed considerably. Originally it was thought that strong winds would be a concern for tonight. That looks to be no longer be the case. Latest information is now bringing strong to severe thunderstorms for Monday afternoon. The greatest likelihood for a damaging thunderstorm will be from the Genesee Valley into the Finger Lakes. If these storms materialize as expected, wind and hail damage look to be the greatest threat. News10NBC has issued a yellow alert to Monday afternoon possibly lasting into early Monday evening.
Tonight you can still expect gusty winds with speeds pushing 35 to 40 miles per hour. The temperature will rise overnight through the 50s. It should be mainly dry Monday morning with the temperature rising into the middle to the upper 60s. Then showers and strong thunderstorms are expected for Monday afternoon with the greatest threat of severe weather east of the Genesee Valley. The temperature will drop sharply with the mercury falling through the 50s into the 40s.
Monday night wet snow is likely and with the temperature quickly falling below freezing with a flash freeze is possible. Eventually the temperature will fall into the upper teens. Snow accumulation should be limited to a coating to two inches. It will feel more like mid-winter on Tuesday as the temperature will stay in the 20s.
