A pair of Rochester natives are headed to the big dance! Melvin Council of Kansas and Arizona’s Jaden Bradley will each play in the NCAA, men’s basketball tournament later this week.
Bradley, who grew up in Rochester, but moved away before he entered high school, will lead the top-seed of the west, Arizona. Bradley won Big 12 Player of the Year after averaging 13.3 points per game, 4.5 assists, and 3.6 rebounds, while leading the Wildcats to a Big 12 regular season and tournament title. Bradley also hit a game-winner in the Big 12 semifinals against Iowa State. Bradley was also named Big 12 Tournament MVP.
Council graduated high school from UPrep before playing two years at Monroe College, a junior college, from 2021-2023. Council averaged 23.8 points per game his freshman year and 18.7 his sophomore campaign, parlaying that success into a Division I opportunity at Wagner College. As a Seahawk, Council led Wagner to the NCAA Tournament, beating Howard University in the First Four as a 16-seed. After losing in the first round, Council transferred to St. Bonaventure where he averaged 14.6 points per contest before declaring for the NBA Draft. Council eventually withdrew from the draft and enrolled with Bill Self’s Kansas Jayhawks. In Lawrence, Council has averaged 12.9 points per game, 5.1 assists, and 4.1 rebounds.
Bradley and the Wildcats will play Long Island University in the first round of the tournament. Four-seeded Kansas will play #13 Cal Baptist in the east region. Both games will be held in San Diego on Friday.
