Bracketology: Alabama a consensus 6 seed, first-round host varies ...Middle East

News by : (The Crimson White) -

Following a 23-10 regular season record with a historic 14-0 start, Alabama women’s basketball is set to make the NCAA Tournament for a fourth straight season. As conferences around the country begin ending their end-of-season tournaments, the field of teams in the NCAA Tournament is becoming clearer by the day.

As of Friday afternoon, the Crimson Tide is forecast across the board as a No. 6 seed, which means it would play a No. 11 seed in the first round of the tournament and would face the winner of the No. 3 vs No. 14 game in the second.

The unique part of the women’s tournament, as opposed to the men’s, is the first weekend’s home venue structure. Each game in the first and second round is played on the campus of seeds 1-4 in the respective regions — the 1 seed will host the No. 1 vs No. 16 matchup and the 8-9 game as well as subsequent Round of 32 games, the 2 seed will host 2-15 and 7-10, and so forth.

While Alabama is a 6 seed in essentially every current bracketology forecast, the region varies by outlet. ESPN’s bracket by Charlie Creme, for example, has the team playing in Fort Worth, Texas, on campus at TCU. Alabama would face the winner of a No. 11-seed First Four game between Nebraska and Richmond, and then the winner of No. 3 TCU and No. 14 Idaho.

Connor Groel of CBS Sports, whose most recent bracket came out Monday, likewise had the Crimson Tide in a group of four playing at TCU. The first round would be against a First Four winner between Nebraska and Arizona State, and the second round would be a matchup with TCU or Green Bay.

Other websites predict different 3-seed hosts. Matthew Walter of The IX Sports has Alabama playing the same First Four opponent of Nebraska-Arizona State, but the No. 3 seed in the region is Louisville, which would play No. 14 Murray State. Her Hoops Stats’ Megan Gauer has the team on campus at Ohio State, playing Nebraska/Virginia in the first round and then the winner between the Buckeyes and the Vermont Catamounts.

There are more brackets out there, but those examples demonstrate the Crimson Tide’s general standing as of now.

The important thing to remember, however, is that bracketology is by no means an end-all and be-all prediction for how things will shake out. With a general consensus for Alabama’s place on the 6-seed line, that position is reasonably likely, but the site of the first round and the opponent can’t be known with any certainty until the bracket is officially announced.

Selection Sunday will be this Sunday at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN.
