The city buzzed with excitement Saturday as many said cheers over green beers and kicked off St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in downtown Chicago.

The festivities started Saturday morning with the dyeing of the Chicago River. The longstanding tradition drew thousands of people to the popular riverwalk.

“We always do this every year,” said Maja Carbonara from Chicago. “We love St. Patrick’s Day and everybody is Irish in Chicago on St. Patrick’s Day so we love it.”

Spectators soaking in the moment and experience. For a mother and daughter duo from suburban Vernon Hills they came prepared. They brought a stepping stool to help them catch glimpse of the green river.

“Last year I totally forgot because I was rushing and then this year [I said] I have to remember,” said Sun Sung from Vernon Hills. “I really remembered to bring it and now I’m taller than these guys.”

The fun didn’t stop there. Bars across the city are cashing in on the weekend, offering drink specials to celebrate the luck of the Irish.

The Irish heritage was on full display at the annual Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade filled with music, pride, and culture.

“It’s really great to see all the members of the community, like performing just enjoying themselves and just like having a good time celebrating their culture,” said 14-year-old Ellie Hulme.

Ellie Hulme was joined by her siblings and dad. This is their third year at the parade.

“We’ve just been watching the parade,” said 9-year-old Ammie Hulme. “It’s been cool.”

People of all ages lined Columbus Drive for the parade now in its 71st year.

“So fun, it’s like the city is alive for this,” said Taite Lozano Brown, who is visiting from Dallas.

“It’s just exciting and it’s grown into a large, huge parade, and the people,” said Roger Chandler, who lives in Chicago.

“My first time here, it’s wonderful,” said Albert Loda, who is attending the parade for the first time. “I recommend it for anybody.”

Governor JB Pritzker, Mayor Brandon Johnson and other politicians also marched along the parade route. This year’s parade theme: faith, peace, and unity. St. Rita’s Father Tom McCarthy served as the grand marshal.  

“We met some amazing people down here that just loves Chicago and it makes it a really nice time to come down here at this time of year,” said Cathy Smtih from the northwest suburbs.
