One of the Windy City’s most famous traditions took place Saturday as thousands flocked to the downtown area to watch the dyeing of the Chicago River.
The festive fun kicked off at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with boatloads of members of the Chicago Plumbers Local 130 union spraying a dye concoction into the waters of the Chicago River to celebrate the St. Patrick’s Day holiday.
The annual tradition of dyeing the river green dates back to 1961 when Stephen Bailey, the business manager of the Chicago Plumbers Local 130 union, came up with the idea after seeing a plumber whose overalls had been dyed a bright green by a dye that was used to detect leaks in the sewer system along the Chicago River.
Though the dye turns the water bright emerald, it looks orange until it hits the surface of the river.
Shortly after the river dyeing concluded, a pair of professional jet ski riders put on a thrilling high-speed performance on the emerald waters.
