The annual Chicago River dye took place Saturday morning, turning one of the city’s most iconic landmarks bright green to celebrate the St. Patrick’s Day holiday.
Though thousands flocked to the downtown area for the spectacle on Saturday, those who have yet to lay eyes on the shamrock-colored waters still have plenty of time to swing by before the dye fully fades away.
The brightest green shade will only be visible for the first few hours after the river is dyed, according to Choose Chicago, however, the green hue typically remains visible at least for a few days.
The Chicago River dye event took place at 10 a.m., and by 4 p.m. the emerald hue was still striking as snow fell in the area.
Weather can play a role in how long the green lingers, with rain and snow diluting the color quicker. With a chance of multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms on the forecast, planning a trip to see the river sooner than later will guarantee the greenest experience.
By 5:15 p.m., the snow had stopped, and, lucky for those hoping the green lasts as long as possible, the color did not seem to have changed much over the hour despite the weather.
Those who can’t make it to the Chicago River before the green disappears can see a miniature version of the shamrock river on display through the end of March over in Schaumburg at the LEGOLAND Discovery Center Chicago in The Streets of Woodfield shopping center, located at 601 N. Martingale Rd.
