ROCHESTER, N.Y. — After the parade ended, hundreds of people stayed downtown to continue celebrating by visiting the bars on East Avenue.
WHECNews10NBC’s Declan Stablow reported live from East Avenue, describing the scene with lines extending well out the doors of the bars, filled with people dressed in green. Kathy Slocum, owner of Filger’s on East Avenue, said the parade day is one of their busiest of the year.
Slocum noted that business was up more than 25 percent compared to last year’s parade day. She and her husband said the dry weather contributed to the increased turnout.
Slocum also said that bars rely on days like this, and they start preparing well in advance for the uptick in business. She added that having many bars nearby is beneficial as people often move from one to another.
Ryan Prine and Daniel Card shared their thoughts on why Saint Patrick’s Day is special. “I think it really just comes down to the community of Rochester. A lot of people are out, you know, just, you know, engagement is really high. There’s a lot of people here that are really looking to enjoy weekend. Yeah, I think we’re in the same boat here, yeah,” they said.
“And Saint Patrick’s Day is just it’s more like an excuse to go out. And I think a lot of people probably are Irish. Yeah, I’m Irish myself, but yeah, it’s it’s more about the, you know, the, hanging out together and the good times,” another added.
People expressed that they didn’t mind the long lines, enjoying the chance to spend time with friends.
