WBC PCA, Fourth Outfielder Battle, Flaherty Speaks and Other Cubs Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Good morning, all. Just four more days until the World Baseball Classic wraps up and 12 days until the Cubs open their 2026 regular season. It’s the point of spring training, I think, where you’re hungry for the final decisions to be made and the games to start counting. I’m there. Are you?

Team USA defeated Team Canada, 5-3, at Daikin Park in Houston last night to advance to the semifinals of the WBC, and Pete Crow-Armstrong was once again a large part of the win. PCA went 2-for-4 with an RBI while his (Cubs) teammate Alex Bregman was 1-for-4 with an RBI. PCA’s two hits were a pull-side line drive single off former Cub Michael Soroka and an RBI soft liner into centerfield off lefty reliever Adam Macko. He looks a lot like the PCA from the first half of the 2025 regular season, but with more poise, and is now hitting .357/.438/.857 with a 58.3% hard-hit rate and 33.3% barrel rate in the WBC. Here’s to PCA having his 2025 first-half swagger back.

— World Baseball Classic (@WBCBaseball) March 14, 2026 Back at spring training, the White Sox defeated the Cubs, 4-2, yesterday. 27-year old lefty Riley Martin got the start for the Cubs and gave up one run, three hits, and struck out three in two innings of work. His spring ERA is 5.06, and he’ll be among the group of reliever depth at Triple-A. Not much offense to speak of in the game with only five hits from the Cubs, but go figure, Moises Ballesteros was two of those five. He’s hitting .333/.360/.735 this spring. Among the more prominent spring training competitions is that for fourth outfielder, and I’m eager to see who winds up going north with the big league club out of the Dylan Carlson, Michael Conforto, and Chas McCormick trio. Each of the three has intrigue, but Carlson’s youth (he’s 27), capability at all three outfield spots (not sure you’d want Conforto in centerfield besides an emergency), the fact he’s a switch-hitter, and his encouraging performance this spring — he’s hitting .360/.529/.969 through 12 games now — makes him my leader of the pack. Yes, spring training stats largely should not and do not matter, but in certain circumstances, like a competition for a particular roster spot, it’s hard to convince me they’re altogether ignored.

Dylan Carlson doubles to begin his day. He’s now 6-for-12 with 5 walks to 3 strikeouts this spring. pic.twitter.com/BtIzY9A30F

— Carson Wolf (@TheWrigleyWire) March 2, 2026 Cubs bench coach Ryan Flaherty met the media yesterday, and if you’re wondering why him, and not Craig Counsell, it was because the Cubs skipper gave himself a vacation day from spring training to watch his daughter’s high basketball team in Wisconsin’s Division 2 State Tournament. Good for Craig and good for Flaherty. It was nice to hear from a different voice, and he had a lot of positive things to say about the challenges the team has given Matt Shaw this spring. Justin Steele continues to take steps in his rehab, facing live hitters for the first time since his injury yesterday. I have very much enjoyed watching video of Gavin Hollowell this spring…

— Carson Wolf (@TheWrigleyWire) March 13, 2026 ICYMI, Alex Bregman did an Alex Bregman thing in last night’s WBC game…
