The big day has finally arrived, as the Chicago River will be dyed green in an iconic annual tradition celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in the city.
The best part is if you can’t make it downtown to watch in person, you’ll still be able to witness it all live.
NBC Chicago will offer a live feed of the river dye starting at 10 a.m. Saturday. The event will stream live in the player above and on our streaming channels, including on Peacock, Roku and Pluto.
The process of dyeing the Chicago River takes about 45 minutes to an hour.
During the river dyeing, members of the Chicago Plumbers Union – situated in boats – use a concoction that sprays dye out of plumbing pipes and spout pumps and into the river.
The mysterious mixture, which was originally used by plumbers to discover leaks in broken pipes, actually comes out orange. The color then quickly changes to green once the dye sets in.
The impeccable brilliant green only lasts for a few hours, with Choose Chicago explaining the water will retain a shade of green after the initial dyeing, but it will slowly fade over time.
In years past, the river has remained green for days.
St. Patrick’s Day festivities in Chicago also include the St. Patrick’s Day parade in downtown Chicago, the South Side Irish Parade, which officials say is the largest-community based St. Patrick’s Day Parade outside of Dublin, Ireland, and the Northwest Side Irish Parade, among others.
