Saturday Night in Vegas, GMKD in Boston, Matthews’ Season Over, and Other Blackhawks Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The Blackhawks have picked up a point in five of their last six games (3-1-2) and are coming off excitingly identical back-to-back 3-2 overtime wins against a Utah team that’s currently in the playoffs. Those excitingly identical games were won on overtime goals from Frank Nazar and Connor Bedard, both of whom are playing significantly better now than they were when both returned from injuries earlier in the season.

The part that I loved most was the swagger the two young Blackhawks displayed after their OT GWGs. There have been times this year where the team looked like they were frustrated or battling. The last two games, they were physical, played with an edge and had fun — and won both games.

Tonight, the Blackhawks are back on the ice in Vegas. And they’ll be wearing black on the road.

Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson was reportedly in Boston last night watching the Maine at Boston College quarterfinal game in the Hockey East Tournament. The Blackhawks don’t have a prospect on either of those rosters, but there were a handful of players who have been drafted already playing. BC ran away with a 5-0 win. I’ll let you figure out if there’s someone on either of those rosters who might be interesting for Davidson to meet while he’s in Boston… However… speaking of Blackhawks business in Boston… we got a bit of an update on the Sacha Boisvert situation at Boston University from Mike McMahon of College Hockey News in his newsletter on Friday. It’s not ideal.

“According to team sources, Boisvert was late to a team workout earlier in the week. It was not his first infraction, and he was ultimately scratched…”

We’ll have to wait to see if Boisvert is back in the Terriers’ lineup tonight at UConn in the quarterfinals of the Hockey East Tournament.

— Mike McMahon (@MikeMcMahonCHN) March 13, 2026 Jesse Granger at The Athletic posted his rankings of the goalie tandems across the NHL on Friday. He has the Blackhawks at No. 19 in the league, and praises Spencer Knight as the starter. Here’s what Granger wrote about the Blackhawks’ backup situation for the future:

Arvid Söderblom hasn’t had as much success. He has the physical tools and shows flashes of brilliance, sliding around the crease and covering the bottom of the net exceptionally well. He also gets caught deep in his crease on occasion, and the numbers haven’t been good.

Another bright spot for Chicago is how Drew Commesso has looked in limited opportunities. He has the pedigree and the skills, and has now shown glimpses of his potential in the NHL.

— Jesse Granger (@JesseGranger_) March 13, 2026 Also at The Athletic, earlier this week Sean McIndoe ranked the regret level for the 12 teams that have already traded their first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. Yes, more than one-third of the league has already moved out of the first round. He had the Panthers’ regret level for traded their first-round pick this year — yes, even with the top-ten protection — at No. 6 on the list. The protection has some weight there, but McIndoe also noted that he really can’t trash the deal too much because the Panthers did ultimately win the Stanley Cup. However, he also notes the following:

But when you factor in the season Knight is having, you do wonder how this one looks down the line. At the very least, Hawks fans have to be thrilled with how this all worked out.

Can I interest you in an OHL-leading 44th goal of the season from Marek Vanacker last night?

— Brantford Bulldogs (@BulldogsOHL) March 14, 2026 On Friday, the Rockford IceHogs announced they have signed forward Chase Dafoe to a two-year AHL contract through the 2026-27 season. Dafoe, 24, was the captain at University of Alaska-Fairbanks this past season. He’s a center who’s listed at 6-3, 201 and scored 13 goals in 33 games this season. The IceHogs also acquired forward Ryland Mosley today from the Cleveland Monsters in exchange for future considerations. Defenseman Jake Murray was released from his PTO and Owen Flores was returned to Indy in the ECHL. The Edmonton Oilers placed Colton Dach on LTIR on Friday with an undisclosed injury. The San Jose Sharks finally recalled Laurent Brossoit. Finally, the dirty cheap shot artist struck again. Radko Gudas authored a knee-on-knee hit on Auston Matthews on Thursday night, and we learned last night that it ended Matthews’ season. Gudas, who is the definition of the term “repeat offender” and also ended Sidney Crosby’s Olympics, was suspended only five games by the NHL. As a reminder, this injury could have a significant impact on the top of the 2026 NHL Draft board. The Leafs traded their first-round pick (with Fraser Minten and a fourth-round pick in the 2025 draft) to Boston for defenseman Brandon Carlo before the deadline last year. Yeah, terrible deal for Toronto. But they put top-five protection on the pick. Toronto came into Friday night’s games tied with New Jersey for the seventh-worst point percentage in the league, but were 2-6-2 in their last 10 games and heading the wrong direction before losing Matthews for the remainder of the season.
