George Russell extended his impressive start to the 2026 season by claiming victory in the Sprint race at the Chinese Grand Prix, beating in the short-form event the Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.
The championship leader controlled the closing laps after a late safety car restart, ensuring he preserved his remarkable run of scoring in every event so far this year.
Russell launched cleanly from pole to retain the lead when the lights went out, but the Mercedes front-row lockout quickly unravelled as Kimi Antonelli struggled off the line, forcing Hamilton to jink to the right to avoid him.

But the Ferrari driver carried enough speed through the opening complex to also sweep past Lando Norris.
With momentum on his side, Hamilton immediately set his sights on Russell and grabbed the lead only a few corners later. What followed was a thrilling exchange reminiscent of Leclerc’s duel with the Mercedes charger in Melbourne.
Russell repeatedly surged ahead along Shanghai’s long back straight, while Hamilton countered by deploying stored energy to reclaim the place around the outside at Turn 1.
The tug-of-war lasted several laps before Russell finally broke the cycle. On lap five he powered ahead once more down the straight, and this time Hamilton lacked the pace to retaliate.
Ferraris Split the Fight
Behind the battling pair, Hamilton’s team-mate Charles Leclerc had been lurking close by. Sensing Hamilton was losing ground, Leclerc slipped past on lap eight.
The move sparked a tense moment the following lap when the two ran side-by-side through the opening turns, prompting Leclerc to question the tight racing over team radio.
While Russell steadily built a cushion up front, Leclerc and Hamilton soon had another challenger looming – Antonelli. The Mercedes youngster had fallen as low as ninth but carved through the field in an aggressive recovery drive.
However, his progress came at a cost: stewards handed him a 10-second penalty for contact with Red Bull rookie Isack Hadjar on the opening lap.
Safety Car Shakes Up the Finish
A late mechanical issue for Nico Hulkenberg’s Audi brought out the safety car and triggered a wave of pit stops. Ferrari double-stacked its drivers, which briefly dropped Hamilton behind Norris, though Hamilton quickly reclaimed fourth down the straight once racing resumed.
Russell handled the three-lap sprint to the flag calmly, finishing ahead of Leclerc and Hamilton to seal the win.
Antonelli used the caution period to serve his penalty and restarted seventh. After a brief shuffle at the restart involving Oscar Piastri, the McLaren driver later returned the position to avoid sanction, allowing Antonelli to recover to fifth by the finish.
Late Charge Falls Short
Further back, Liam Lawson and Oliver Bearman held the final points-paying spots after staying out on their starting tyres. They came under intense pressure from Max Verstappen, who had surged from a disastrous start that briefly dropped him to last.
Despite the Dutchman’s rapid charge on fresh tyres, the chequered flag arrived before he could complete the comeback.
Nineteen cars reached the finish, with rookie Arvid Lindblad and Valtteri Bottas the only retirements in an otherwise frenetic Sprint in Shanghai.
