Though a Chicago local will be quick to tell you the Windy City title does not stem from the local weather, nonetheless, Friday’s strong gusts lived up to the name.

A high wind warning for the entire Chicago area was in effect from late Thursday night until 4 p.m. on Friday.

Power lines, thick tree branches, and in some cases, full trees, were knocked down across the region by the strong gusts, leaving thousands without power throughout the day and damaging several buildings.

The gusts were powerful enough to blow the roofs of a school in Niles and an apartment building in Elmhurst.

The National Weather Service reported peak gusts that were recorded at several locations across the region throughout the morning.
