In North Carolina’s four previous trips to the ACC Tournament under coach Hubert Davis, the Tar Heels hadn’t claimed a conference championship, but they had never gone home without one or two victories, either.
In fact, in three of those four years, Carolina ultimately fell to the team that went on to capture the ACC title — Virginia Tech in 2022, NC State (in the championship game) in 2024, and Duke in 2025. The 2026 Tar Heels, though, went one-and-done at the ACC’s crown-jewel event this year, falling 80-79 to #5 seed Clemson in Thursday night’s quarterfinals before a heavily pro-Carolina crowd at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte.
Less than two weeks ago, when UNC defeated Clemson 67-63 in Chapel Hill, junior guard Luka Bogavac lifted the Tar Heels to victory with his best shooting performance of the season. Bogavac hit six 3-pointers and posted a career-high 20 points as the Heels captured a low-scoring grinder of a game after trailing 30-27 at halftime.
This time, Carolina faced an even bigger halftime deficit — 39-31 — and, in the end, there weren’t quite enough perimeter sharpshooters to save the day. Bogavac missed his first four field goal attempts and his first three 3-point tries, and even after a late flurry, the Tar Heels collectively made only 11 of their 30 attempts from long range.
Meanwhile, on a night when Clemson’s reserves provided a huge lift in the absence of injured starting center Carter Welling, UNC’s second-team players simply failed to meet the moment. Led by 17 points from backup center Nick Davidson and 10 from backup guard Jestin Porter, Clemson posted 29 bench points to Carolina’s five.
Whereas UNC starters Henri Veesaar, Derek Dixon, Jarin Stevenson and Seth Trimble all scored in double figures, and Veesaar posted a stunning double-double with 28 points and 17 rebounds, the Tar Heels’ second-team quartet of Kyan Evans, Jonathan Powell, Jaydon Young and Zayden High collectively managed only five points in 36 total minutes.
As Clemson moved on to face Duke in Friday night’s ACC semifinals, UNC was left to contemplate its quick and painful exit from the event — and perhaps consider its shaky seed in the absence of out-for-the-season star Caleb Wilson — once the NCAA Tournament Selection Show arrives on Sunday afternoon.
