Another Bears Safety Leaves: Jaquan Brisker is Off to the Steelers ...Middle East

Jaquan Brisker is headed to the Steel City.

Brisker, a Chicago Bears second-round pick from Ryan Poles’ first draft class as general manager in 2022, is signing a free-agent contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. It is a homecoming for Brisker, the Pittsburgh-born defensive back who played collegiately at Penn State. And just like that, the Bears’ starting safeties from the last two seasons are off to the AFC:

A one-year deal worth $5.5 million is a modest price for a starting safety in the NFL. There is a part of me that is surprised that Brisker didn’t get more in the open market. But there is also a part of me that understands that Brisker is just one year removed from a season in which he missed 11 games due to a concussion. For a lot of NFL teams, availability is the best “ability” a player can have. And I imagine many teams want to see Jaquan Brisker prove that he can stay on the field.

In other words, this is essentially a one-year “prove it” contract for Brisker. If he can stay on the field and put up production similar to what was shown in Chicago, he could position himself for a bigger deal next offseason when there aren’t as many intriguing safety options available in free agency or the NFL Draft.

REPORT: The Steelers are signing ex-Bears safety Jaquan Brisker

The Bears used the second pick of the Ryan Poles era to take Jaquan Brisker in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Taken with the 48th overall selection, Brisker immediately stepped in as a starter and established himself as a quality safety. He racked up 104 total tackles (73 solo), five tackles-for-loss, four quarterback hits, one interception, and a four sacks. Save for a 2024 season in which a concussion limited him to just five games, Brisker’s ability to chip in on defense at multiple levels was valuable and evident throughout his four-year stint with the team. And the way that he played with a passionate fire helped make him a fan favorite.

JAQUAN BRISKER’S 2025 CHICAGO BEARS EXIT INTERVIEW

Jaquan Brisker finished his Bears career with a flurry. The Penn State product played what was arguably his best game as a pro in what turned out to be his final game in Chicago. Brisker made a game-high 14 tackles (including eight solo), and chipped in elsewhere in the box score with one sack, one tackle-for-loss, and a quarterback hit. I’m not sure that Brisker will post those types of numbers on a weekly basis, but that snap shot provides a glimpse of the safety’s potential and what things can look like if he stays healthy moving forward.
