A high wind warning was in effect for the entire Chicago area Friday, with gusts already clocking in at 60 miles per hour making for potentially dangerous driving conditions for the morning rush hour commute.
“They could turn damaging,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said. “They could blow down limbs from trees, cause power outages, blow down power lines and even create difficult travel. You can see the cameras shaking.”
NBC 5 traffic reporter Kye Martin showed a live camera out by Midway Airport as it wobbled from the winds.
“You can see the camera shaking here,” Martin said. “On the roads, we’re seeing those high winds impacting your speeds. You’re not able to go as fast as you normally would.”
About 5:30 a.m. Friday, some of the strongest winds were up north in Waukegan, coming in close to 50 mph. Gusts between 50 and 60 mph or even higher will last through the morning, dropping slightly between 40 and 50 mph by afternoon, Roman said.
According to the National Weather Service, the high wind warning will remain in effect until 4 p.m. Friday.
Temperatures Friday will be in the mid 40s, Roman said, which is seasonal for this time of year. Overnight into Saturday, a system will move in, bringing a few light, scattered showers or snowflakes through about 12 p.m.
The Chicago area was expected to remain dry for the city’s iconic St. Patrick’s Day river dyeing, which kicks off at 10 a.m., Roman said. But it will be chilly, with highs in the 40s.
Sunday will be a warmer day, Roman said, with high temperatures in the in the 50s and 60. Sunday also brings the chance for rain and storms to develop, starting in counties to the west at about 12 p.m.
By afternoon, more widespread showers and a few storms were expected to develop, Roman said.
“And then look what happens,” Roman said, as rain transitions to snow overnight into Monday. “Perhaps some accumulating snow at that time.”
Temperatures Monday will be in the 30s, Roman said, with even colder readings in the 20s for Tuesday.
