2026 Cary, North Carolina Sectionals

March 12-15, 2026 Triangle Aquatic Center, Cary, North Carolina Short Course Yards (25 yards), Prelims/Finals Results on Meet Mobile: “2026 NC TAC Speedo Champions Series ESSZ”

U.S. Olympian Ashley Twichell won the women’s 1000 free, and a group of high schoolers had breakout swims in the men’s 1000 free, on night 1 of the 2026 Cary Sectionals.

Twichell, 36, didn’t compete officially between the 2024 Olympic Trials and November 2025. Since then, she has worked her way back into competition with meets every four-to-six weeks.

On Thursday, she won the 1000 free in 9:39.58, her best time in that event of three swims in her most recent comeback. That won the race by about two seconds ahead of Brooke Travis, who was second in 9:41.51.

Twichell’s husband, Derek Wall, is the executive director of the home team, and the club defended home turf with the top six finishers in the 1000 free on Friday. Another collegiate post-grad Caroline Pennington was 3rd in 9:55.05, followed by the top junior-aged swimmer, 15-year-old Liv Fleshman, in 4th in 9:57.98.

That was a big level-up for Fleshman, who dropped more than 12 seconds off her previous lifetime best. That’s her second-straight personal best in this race and in total this season she has dropped almost 17 seconds in the event.

A high school sophomore, she now ranks 14th among 15-year-olds nationally this season.

While the women’s race was dominated by post-collegiate swimmers and TAC Titans, the men’s race was almost an entirely different turn. Swimmers from NCAC took the top two spots, both in big time drops.

17-year-old Colt Chaires dropped 7.76 seconds to win in 9:04.45. He’s committed to Ohio State in the class of 2027, a program that had two swimmers in the top six at the recent Big Ten Championships – the second-most successful program besides Indiana.

His teammate Lysander Mihaly, 16, dropped more than five seconds to finish 2nd in 9:07.59. He’s also a junior that has not yet announced a college commitment, but can expect lots of offers soon as he now ranks 5th nationally this season among 16-year-olds in this event.

There were lots of other big drops in the men’s 1000. After Ewan Dalrymple (9:11.70) and Fedor Didenko (9:14.21), 16-year-old Teddy Peterson dropped 13.6 seconds to finish 5th in 9:14.21.

The TAC women won the 800 free relay in 7:10.11 with a team of Carolin He, Sloane Whelehan, Reina Liu, and Caden Martin. Liu, who will be a star this week in Cary, split 1:45.54.

The Mecklenburg boys won their 800 free relay, with a team of Maxon Brienza, Teddy Peterson, Dylan Stewart, and Mike Rice combining for a 6:30.92. Rice, a high school senior and Auburn commit, split 1:34.06 on the anchor leg – a time that could have put him on Auburn’s 800 free relay at SECs this year.

His flat-start best is 1:34.96.
