PALMYRA, N.Y. — Chad Campbell, who was convicted of raping and stabbing 15-year-old Cindy Lewis and 17-month-old Curtis Rizzo in 1990, has been released from prison. Campbell, who was 14 at the time of the crime, was transferred from Sullivan County to a community-based residential program in Erie County. The public and the D.A. from Wayne County opposed his return back to Wayne County.

A spokesperson for the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision said Campbell’s release includes “intensely supervised electronic monitoring.”
Wayne County District Attorney Christine Calanan opposed Campbell’s release. “I hope we never hear from Chad Campbell again that he goes on to live whatever type of life he can, outside of this prison,” said Calanan. “But the opposition to his release and him being out of prison, in my opinion, still isn’t the appropriate result of this case.”
The parole board decided on Campbell’s release after an interview with him in November. During the interview,
Calanan worked with the sheriff and Ontario town supervisor to ensure those most impacted by Campbell’s crime would not have to live in the same community as him. “There is some relief to the fact that he wasn’t released back into our community, but, it’s still a difficult day for a lot of people,” said Calanan.
News10NBC’s Chris Fortune reached out to family members of Cindy Lewis and Curtis Rizzo, but they declined to comment.
