Foodlink to host conference with hundreds of food bank leaders, as SNAP changes take effect ...Middle East

News by : (News10NBC) -

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Foodlink will bring together hundreds of local food bank leaders for its annual “Nourish” Member Agency Conference on Thursday morning.

The conference comes amid a new work requirement for some people getting federal food assistance. Able-bodied adults without dependents will need to work or volunteer to receive SNAP benefits next time they recertify, because of changes in federal policy. However, some people are exempt.

Foodlink says the conference will address the recent changes to SNAP and highlight efforts across the region to tackle food insecurity. It will also give food pantry leaders the chance to exchange ideas, coordinate responses to new challenges, and meet with Foodlink’s experts.

Foodlink, based in Rochester, serves as a food bank for hundreds of food pantries and meal programs across the 10-county region. Foodlink leaders say the SNAP changes are expected to increase demand for emergency food assistance programs. If you need food assistance, you can see Foodlink’s interactive map here.

More details on the new SNAP rules

The SNAP work requirements are for people between 18 and 64 who aren’t caring for a child under the age of 14. People who are receiving disability benefits, pregnant, or unable to work due to a physical or mental condition are exempt. You can learn more about who is exempt on the state’s website. If you’re not exempt, you must work for 20 hours a week, paid or unpaid.

The requirements went into effect on March 1. Monroe County Executive Adam Bello says people who are due to recertify their benefits should act immediately to either meet the requirements or to show that they’re exempt. In Monroe County, there are two more town halls to learn about the new requirements:

Wednesday, March 18: Foodlink Farm on Lexington Avenue from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 28: Webster Recreation Center on Chiyoda Drive from 2 to 4 p.m.

How many people rely on SNAP in the region

Over 130,000 people rely on SNAP across the Finger Lakes region. That includes nearly 15% of households in Monroe County and just over 14% of households in Orleans County. You can see News10NBC’s breakdown of the SNAP numbers here. Here’s a summary:

Monroe County: 106,801 people (14.8% of households) Ontario County: 9,206 people (8.7% of households) Wayne County: 8,229 people (11% of households) Orleans County: 5,146 households (14.4% of households) Livingston County: 5,116 people (10% of households) Yates County: 2,092 people (10.7% of households)
