“We’ve been trying to do the movie while fighting all kinds of studios and all kinds of stuff since 1987,” Schwartz, 79, said in the interview published in March 2026. “Different ideas get pitched, but nothing has had any traction. At the moment, I think we’re mired in who’s going to run Warner Brothers after the Paramount acquisition of the company... that’s where Gilligan‘s current ownership rests.”
In the late 1970s, the passengers of the ill-fated ship the S.S. Minnow returned for a trio of TV movies— Rescue from Gilligan's Island, The Castaways of Gilligan's Island, and The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island—but a big-screen homage in the likes of The Brady Bunch Movie is still in limbo.
One of Lloyd Schwartz’s movie ideas was a prequel to the sitcom.
“Warner Brothers at that point said, ‘No, no, we have other writers,’” Schwartz recalled of his script. “We’ve had three or four scripts written over the years. …We’ve agreed to other writers—and then those scripts went away. ”
In 2013, The Hollywood Reporter announced a Gilligan’s Island movie was in the works at Warner Bros., with Josh Gad penning the script with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. Lloyd Schwartz was listed as an executive producer on the project, which never came to fruition.
"Instead of trusting the people who actually created and understand the show, they dictate how it should be done. And, inevitably, they fail," he added. "Over the years, so many people have come and gone, executives have made promises, key figures have passed away—it’s a long, sad, and often ridiculous story."
