We should rejoice at Meghan Markle’s £1,700 meet and greet – she’s no Fergie ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

Underestimate the Duchess of Sussex at your peril. Meghan Markle is showing the world (and her dissenters) that she can go from royal to reality TV star, to Middle East envoy – and now, to “special guest speaker” at an event charging £1,440 per ticket for an event that wouldn’t look out of place on the latest series of The White Lotus.

Meghan’s latest venture – headlining at a lucrative intimate “girls’ weekend” in Sydney, during a trip to Australia next month with her husband, Prince Harry – will be hosted by the Her Best Life podcast and will feature a “powerful women’s session”, high-end yoga, mediation and manifestation sessions and a gala dinner.

The three-day retreat, held at the five-star InterContinental Sydney Coogee Beach hotel from 17 April, will also feature “in-person conversation with Meghan”. And those willing to pay above the odds (£1,700 per ticket) will be able to take home the chance to appear in a group photo with the Duchess.

It’s all very Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop, isn’t it? Yet it feels strangely inevitable, coming hot off the heels of Meghan’s reinvention as a lifestyle guru, frosted flower afficionado, jam and candle-maker and whatever else we saw her doing in her soft focus, sepia-tinted (and widely-panned) Netflix series, With Love, Meghan.

Still, I can’t help but give her full credit where it’s due. Meghan really is smashing this “non-working, working royals” thing, in a way that Sarah Ferguson, sadly, never quite managed. The former duchess of York has a litany of failed business ventures behind her, and is now said to be deep in debt and “couch-surfing with friends in New York” after being dropped by multiple charities following her links to the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Not Meghan: she and Prince Harry may have stepped back from their official duties to raise their children in California, but she’s certainly capitalising on – well, their social capital. And Meghan is proving that she may be many things (actor, reality TV star, thorn in the side of the Royal Family), but the thing she’s best at? Being a savvy businesswoman.

Fair play, Meghan. I wouldn’t pay £1,440 to see you because I can’t afford it, frankly, but a cursory glance at these kinds of corporate events tells me many would pay a lot more (a one-to-one with American entrepreneur and businessman Grant Cardone, for example, would cost you $100,000). An “in-person conversation with Meghan”, then, is cheap.
