Rain, snow and ‘damaging' winds coming to Chicago area after tornadoes destroyed homes ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Snowflakes, rain and winds gusting as high as 60 miles per hour were in the Chicago forecast for the end of the work week, with the National Weather Service warning of “damaging” winds that could down trees and lead to “widespread” power outages.

The windy forecast comes as storm cleanup in Kankakee County and northwest Indiana continues, where severe weather, tornadoes and giant clumps of hail destroyed hundreds of houses and buildings.

“This is the kind of the stuff that we see as we start to change cold air and get into warmer air,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said, as spring approaches. Earlier in the week, temperatures were in the 70s with sunny skies,

Thursday started off cold, Roman said, with temperatures in the 20s and 30s. Clouds were expected to increase throughout the day, with high temperatures in the 40s.

Overnight, widespread but quickly moving showers will move across the Chicago area, with rain expected to come to an end about 5 a.m. A snowflake or two could mix in, Roman said.

Overnight is also when a high wind watch will go into effect for nearly the entire Chicago area. In counties to the west, including DeKalb, LaSalle and Grundy Counties in Illinois, as well as Kenosha County in Wisconsin, a wind advisory will be in effect.

“Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines,” the NWS warned, for counties under the wind watch. “Widespread power outages are possible.” Travel could also be difficult, the NWS said, especially for high profile vehicles like commercial trucks, buses or large SUVs.

According to the NWS, the wind watches and advisories will be in effect through Friday evening. Winds could gust as high as 60 mph, peaking in the mid-morning to early afternoon hours.
