Rep. Barry Moore, a Trump-endorsed Republican running for the U.S. Senate in Alabama, spoke at a UA College Republicans meeting on Wednesday. Moore currently serves as congressman for Alabama’s 1st congressional District.
Moore grew up on a farm and started a waste hauling company after college.
“I always make a joke that the transition from garbage to politics is pretty easy,” Moore said. “There’s a lot of stinky stuff. You kind of have to sort through it, get the good stuff, and put it back in the next time.”
Throughout the talk, Moore elaborated on what he described as corruption within the state and federal government.
“There’s a thing called the matrix in Montgomery. It’s like the swamp in D.C., and it’s a lot of special interests,” he said. “It’s a lot of the power brokers.”
He said that officials in Montgomery tried to “drag him through the mud” in 2014 when he was charged with perjury. He was acquitted of his charges of two counts of perjury and two counts of giving false statements at a special grand jury in Lee county. Moore highlighted this as a circumstance that reshaped his sense of calling.
“I ran in the Republican primary under felony indictment, but we won,” he said. “Not only did we win the case, we won the race. Through that process, the Lord did an incredible work in my heart, and he changed me.”
This led Moore to run for Congress, where he was elected to serve as representative of Alabama’s 2nd congressional District in 2020. He noted he currently has the most conservative record in Alabama, with a Conservative Review’s Liberty score of 96%, meaning that he votes conservatively a vast majority of the time.
In 2024, Moore ran to represent Alabama’s 1st congressional District after the state’s congressional map was redrawn to create a chance for a second minority district in the state. He unseated former Rep. Jerry Carl in the Republican primary, and defeated Democratic opponent Tom Holmes in the general election.
Moore said he wants to prioritize affordability in the U.S. and that the One Big Beautiful Bill will be coming with more tax breaks for Americans.
“For those of you who wait tables, there’s no tax on tips. It’s all retroactive. No tax on overtime. No tax on your interest on cars,” he said. “We make a lot of cars in Alabama, so it’s cool that you can buy a car and not get taxed on the interest.”
He also expressed his thoughts on environmental and economic policy.
“We have to be wise about how we approach it and not be so ideological that we think ‘well, we have to go all green,’ because the technology is just not there,” Moore said. “You have to look at where the economics of the energy policy makes sense for the consumers.”
Specifically, he emphasized the need for the U.S. to become a net exporter of energy and reduce dependence on foreign oil.
Students who attended said that the event helped them better understand Moore’s positions. Pierce Bartle, a sophomore majoring in criminal justice, said that hearing Moore’s thoughts on various issues resonated with him.
“I live in Alabama, so the Senate race is close to home,” Bartle said. “He did a good job of describing what’s going on and how they plan on fixing it. We’re young people going out into the world and planning on buying houses, building houses, and the cost of living is just going up, so I hope he gets it down.”
Brebhinn Holt, a senior majoring in political science, said that she attended to broaden her understanding of different candidates.
“I’ve had a really unique perspective, because my dad was born and raised just outside Huntsville, but my mom is from Ireland,” she said. “It’s really exposed me to two completely different political contexts, and seeing how U.S. politics works versus Ireland politics has really encouraged me to delve into both of those.”
