National Weather Service confirms EF-3 level tornado struck Kankakee County ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

A tornado of EF-3 intensity ripped through Kankakee County Tuesday evening, marking the second tornado confirmed by the National Weather Service for the severe storm.

NWS survey crews in the field Wednesday confirmed a tornado with peak winds near 150 mph moved through the Chicago area on the following path: first through the southern portion of Kankakee and northern Aroma Park, then just south of Sun River Terrance and just north of Hopkins Park, then over the border into Indiana through the southern portion of Lake Village and through the northern portion of Roselawn, Indiana.

NWS said the 150 mph winds occurred along Sandbar Road northeast of Aroma Park. An EF-3 tornado is one with winds between 136 to 165 mph, according to NWS.

NBC Chicago viewer Tom Martin shared a video Tuesday of the reported tornado spinning up debris in Aroma Park.

Though at least four suspected tornadoes touched down after they were spawned by a “supercell tornado” during severe storms Tuesday, only two tornadoes have been confirmed by NWS. The EF-3 tornado that began in Kankakee, and a EF-1 level tornado that touched down near Wheatfield, Indiana, with peak winds near 110 mph.

Several homes in Kankakee County were reduced to rubble after the storms. The severity of the damage prompted county officials to activate its Emergency Operations Center and file an emergency declaration with the state of Illinois.

Though no injuries or deaths have been reported in Kankakee County, an elderly couple was found dead in a home that was struck by a tornado in northwest Indiana, authorities said.

Aerial footage captured by NBC Chicago’s Sky5 showed devastation across Kankakee County on Wednesday.

Several schools across the county were closed Wednesday due to damage and planned assessments.

An Aroma Park resident named Bob told NBC Chicago he survived the storm that caused his house to cave in on top of him by going into a utility closet in his basement.

The storms “started getting louder and I started hearing stuff breaking and caving in and pretty soon my kitchen fell on top of me from upstairs,” he said. “Everything caved in, the fridge and everything. Luckily, I was in, like, a hole, so I didn’t get hurt at all — I was just trapped.”

Bob was rescued from the debris by his neighbors.
