Novelist sets book series in La Jolla with a sexy surfer and a determined reporter ...Middle East

SAN DIEGO – Caitlin Rother’s 16th and 17th books — one recently released and the other due out this summer — are a thriller-fiction series set in La Jolla, where the journalist-turned-author grew up.

The first book in her “Katrina & Goode” series, titled “Hooked,” is now on sale, with its sequel, “Staged,” expected out in June.

Rother’s two main characters in her new thriller series — an alluring surfing homicide detective, Ken Goode, and an investigative reporter, Katrina Chopin — are drawn from her real-life experiences.

“They both share some trauma in their past,” Rother said. Without disclosing too many details, the author said these two characters, after getting involved in the same crime investigation, “end up spending the rest of the book investigating two suspicious deaths while trying to navigate this romantic and professional tension between them, with both competing to solve this mystery.”

She chose 2015 as the year for her series to take place because she wanted her story “to be a tribute to old school journalism,” when she said reporters “worked in bustling newsrooms” and were known for their “integrity and doing the right thing.”

Rother added that her sequel, “Staged: A Thriller,” “picks up where ‘Hooked’ left off.” She said readers will be familiar with several locations the sequel takes place in, such as the Hotel del Coronado and Piatti Italian Restaurant in La Jolla Shores.

“I don’t want cartoon characters, I want them to have verisimilitude,” Rother added. “I want it to be an exciting and good story with believable characters that resonate with people, but not black-and-white characters.”

She said she has brought all her previous experiences as a journalist to bear in writing her novels.

Rother also offered advice for aspiring novelists.

“Learn your material,” she said. “There’s no overnight secret. Know all the protocols. Learn your craft. Don’t just think, ‘I’m going to write a self-published book.’ Take some classes. Learn how to write a novel.”
