A stunning first-half hat-trick from Federico Valverde gave Real Madrid a dominant 3-0 win over Manchester City in the Bernabéu to put themselves firmly in charge of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie.

Valverde had never scored a hat-trick for Madrid before, but found the net with all three of his shots before the break to shock Pep Guardiola’s side, who were a tame opponent in the Spanish capital.

City struggled to create much, and can consider themselves fortunate the score wasn’t worse, as Gianluigi Donnarumma saved a penalty from Vinícius Júnior in the second half.

Kylian Mbappé was absent with injury, but for a change, Madrid didn’t seem to miss their talismanic striker.

It was City who had more of the play early on, with Antoine Semenyo hitting a shot on target that was easily saved by Thibaut Courtois, while Jérémy Doku fizzed a ball across the Madrid box that his teammates couldn’t turn in.

Donnarumma made a smart save from former City man Brahim Díaz, but the Italian goalkeeper made an absolute mess of a long ball from his counterpart Courtois soon after, which was controlled by Valverde. The Uruguayan then prodded the ball past Donnarumma, who had come racing out of his goal, and calmly finished to put Madrid ahead.

Valverde made it two after Vinícius dribbled inside from the left. The Brazilian’s pass was deflected into Valverde’s path by Rúben Dias, and the Madrid captain fired across Donnarumma with a left-foot effort to double Los Blancos’ advantage.

With just 27 minutes played, Valverde’s brace was the quickest by a Real Madrid player in a Champions League knockout-stage game at the Bernabéu since Cristiano Ronaldo against Wolfsburg in April 2016 (17 minutes).

He wasn’t done there, either, sealing his hat-trick in the 42nd minute. A Madrid attack started with Vinícius’ run from the left, and led to Arda Güler on the right chipping the ball into the path of Valverde. He dinked it over the outstretched leg of Marc Guéhi and volleyed in superbly.

It was a sublime goal to seal a tremendous treble for Valverde, the first of his career. It also made him only the second player to score a first-half hat-trick against an English opponent in the Champions League after Lionel Messi for Barcelona against Arsenal in April 2010.

Prior to Wednesday, Valverde had only scored three times in 75 Champions League appearances, meaning he doubled his total in just 42 first-half minutes against Man City.

Pep Guardiola brought on Tijjani Reijnders at half-time, taking off Savinho, who had been far less effective in the opening 45 minutes than he was in City’s FA Cup win at Newcastle at the weekend.

It could have been 4-0 early in the second half when Díaz ran at the City defence and got a shot away, but Donnarumma made an excellent save down to his right.

An even better chance wasn’t far off, though, after Donnarumma brought down Vinícius in the 56th minute when the Brazilian ran through on goal and tried to round the City stopper. Vinícius stepped up to take it himself, but it was saved down to his left by the gigantic Italian.

City struggled to create much of note, but Antonio Rüdiger produced an excellent clearance in the 68th minute to flick away a low cross from Semenyo that would otherwise have surely been tapped home by the otherwise quiet Erling Haaland.

City almost had a bizarre goal back when youngster Thiago Pitarch dallied in his own penalty area and Nico O’Reilly prodded the ball goalwards, but Courtois stuck his leg out and deflected the shot away superbly.

Madrid saw out the victory with a clean sheet, putting them in a strong position ahead of next Tuesday’s second leg at the Etihad Stadium, where City will need to complete quite a turnaround… and perhaps keep a closer eye on Valverde.
