After Italy upset the Americans last night, the fate of three teams hangs in the balance tonight when the Italians take on Mexico at Daikin Park in Houston, Texas.
Team USA entered this year’s World Baseball Classic with what many believed was its deepest roster yet. But after Tuesday night’s stunning 8–6 loss to Italy at Daikin Park, the Americans no longer control their own path out of Pool B.

One thing is certain: Mexico would advance with a win, regardless of the tiebreakers. But the second quarterfinal spot would come down to the math between Italy and the United States.
Assuming a standard nine-inning game, Team USA’s path is simple: the Americans would advance if Italy loses while allowing five runs or more. If the Italians lose but give up four runs or fewer, however, they would move on instead.
Extra innings, of course, could scramble the calculations entirely.
For now, Team USA’s players will spend Wednesday night watching the game together from their Houston hotel — knowing that the result will determine whether their tournament run continues or ends before the knockout rounds even begin.
